SWIN’s Darby McCarthy Race Day is a special occasion dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of the late Darby McCarthy—an icon in the racing world and a trailblazer for Indigenous jockeys. With an extraordinary career that included wins in prestigious Group 1 races such as the AJC Derby and the Epsom Handicap, as well as three Stradbroke Handicap victories, Darby left an enduring legacy on the sport. Riding over 1,000 winners across Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, his contribution to racing is etched into history. Beyond his success on the track, Darby was a passionate advocate for his people, founding an apprentice school for Indigenous youth to create pathways into the racing industry.
This day also serves to reflect on the origins and purpose of SWIN, honouring the journey so far and the vision for the future. It is a time to celebrate our lifetime members and acknowledge the dedication of our staff based in Toowoomba, Roma, and Cunnamulla. Their tireless efforts in delivering programs and events rooted in sport, culture, and wellbeing continue to uplift First Nations people and the wider community—working toward longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
